The Sporting Unity project aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and critical thinking by examining the historical and contemporary connections between Olympic education and colonialism. By leveraging the universal values of the Olympic Games—respect, fairness, and inclusion—the project seeks to empower youth and address issues of social justice and inclusion.
The initiative incorporates innovative virtual exchange activities, e-learning tools, and facilitator-led discussions, promoting dialogue across diverse cultures.
Dictatorship and sport in Greece: when control wore a jersey
Sport has always been a symbol of freedom, teamwork, and fair play, but during the Greek dictatorship (1967–1974), it was used for something else entirely: Control. Uniformity. Propaganda.
Under the regime, sport became a tool to promote military discipline, obedience, and nationalism.
Mass athletic events, parades, and youth gatherings were staged to create a “spectacle”—designed to make people feel “normal” under the watchful eye of the army
As the quote reminds us:
“Everything is aimed at impressing and creating a 'spectacle,' with the ultimate goal of addicting the people and making them feel 'normal' in the presence of the army and this whole network of uniformity, orders, marching, and military discipline.”
Through the Sporting Unity project, we explore how sport has been shaped by history—and how it can be reclaimed as a space for democracy, inclusion, and human dignity.
